—The Romance Of The Western Chamber
At the beginning of the story, Zhang Sheng was on his way to take the imperial examination in the capital.
When passing by Hezhong Prefecture and visiting the Pujiu Temple, he happened to meet Cui Yingying and was immediately enamored with her. At this time, Cui Yingying and her mother, Madam Cui, were forced to stay temporarily in the west wing of the Pujiu Temple due to the obstruction of rebellious soldiers. Later, there was a mutiny at the river bridge. The rebel general Sun Feihu besieged the Pujiu Temple, he forcibly demanded that Yingying be his wife in the bandit stronghold.
To save her daughter, Madam Cui promised that whoever could repel the bandits would marry the young lady to him. ZhangSheng stepped forward in response and wrote a letter to General DuQue. The General who was guarding Pugu Pass, asking him to send troops to relieve the siege. After receiving the letter, DuQue led his troops to relieve the siege, defeated Sun Feihu. He rescued the Cui family and all the monks and laypeople in the temple.
However, after the bandits retreated, Madam Cui despised Zhang Sheng’s background and broke her promise. She only allowed Yingying to address Zhang Sheng as her elder brother. Zhang Sheng fell ill with lovesickness and lay sick in the west wing. Yingying asked her maid Hongniang to visit Zhang Sheng and make an appointment by writing a poem. Hongniang secretly played matchmaker and facilitated their meeting at night.
Helplessly, Madam Cui pretended to agree to their marriage but, on the grounds of family status, asked ZhangSheng to go to the capital to take the imperial examination immediately. She deceived Yingying into believing that Zhang Sheng had changed his heart and abandoned her, which made her extremely sad.
Fortunately, in the end, Hongniang brought good news, saying that ZhangSheng had indeed passed the examination and had not changed his heart. ZhangSheng explained their relationship to the emperor, the emperor specially bestowed a phoenix coronet and ceremonial robe on his lover.
Finally, with the congratulations of everyone, Zhang Sheng and Cui Yingying got married. The two made a wish in front of the Buddha: “May all lovers in the world be united in marriage.” This famous saying has been passed down through the ages.
This is undoubtedly a very beautiful story. Hongniang in the story is a key figure in facilitating the love between Cui Yingying and Zhang Sheng. Due to the wide spread and deep-rooted influence of “The Romance of the Western Chamber”, “Hongniang” has gradually become a synonym for matchmaker, symbolizing those who play matchmaker and enthusiastically facilitate the beautiful marriages of others.
And the Pujiu Temple is a place that runs through the entire story. The meaning of “Pujiu” is to save all living beings. The causes and consequences of this love story are all here. It’s hard to say that they haven’t been blessed by the Buddha.
