The Dream of Venus in The Seashell
Venus is a famous Roman goddess whose functions encompass love, beauty, desire, sex, fertility, prosperity, and victory. There are many arts which describe her stories.
The Birth of Venus is a painting by the Italian artist Sandro Botticelli, probably executed in the mid 1480s. The Birth of Venus is perhaps his most recognisable work. Within the painting, Venus, goddess of beauty and love, is depicted arriving to the island of Cyprus, carried on an enlarged scallop shell. Venus was said to be‘ born of the sea spray.
In this painting, Venus was born in a shell. And before the shell, Venus seems to have had no origin myth until her association with Greek Aphrodite. Venus-Aphrodite emerged, already in adult form, from the sea foam produced by the severed genitals of Caelus-Uranus.
We don’t really like the statement that she was transformed from the genital. It sounds similar to the idea that woman is an accessory made by man like a rib. Which is fully reflecting the narcissistic complex of men. We would rather believe that Venus was born in the sea. Perhaps she underwent metamorphosis in a shell, gradually changing from a pearl into a beautiful goddess. Who knows?
As we imagine her within the seashell, what exquisite dreams might she be having? Inspired by this imagery, this bracelet features kunzite representing feminine beauty, the aquamarine symbolizes the sea foam, fantastic and fragile. With the amethysts, it is designed to greatly enhance the wearer’s attractiveness and stimulate creativity.
